Webinar on “Desig Thinking and Innovation” by innovation ambassador Prof. Satyesh Kakodkar
A talk on “Design Thinking and Innovation” was delivered by Mr. Satyesh Kakodkar,Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering Department and Innovation Ambassador , MoE –IIC on 6th March 2021.
In his presentation Mr. Satyesh Kakodkar , elaborated the definition of design thinking and explained the different phases of design thinking. Mr Kakodkar , explained how design thinking helps to upgrade our living standards. While explaining the different phases of design thinking, Mr. Kakodkar spoke about the methods used in each phase and how best the methods can be adopted.
Sighting different examples, he explained the role of each phase in design thinking and its link to innovation. He also spoke about importance of mind mapping and empathy map in fuelling the process of innovation. Webinar was well received by near about 160 and appreciated by near about 160 participants. Dr. Vivek Jog , Assistant Professor in Computer Engineering coordinated the event.
Knowledge Sharing Session on Rough Sets and Fuzzy Sets
The Department of Computer Engineering, Don Bosco College of Engineering-Fatorda-Goa, organized its monthly Knowledge Sharing Session, under the R&D cell on March 6, 2021. The Knowledge Sharing Session initiative involves activities whose main motive is to update Faculty members with the latest trends in Technology and Research and to learn something beyond academics.
The session was taken up by Prof. Amrita Naik on “Rough Sets” and Prof. Janhavi Naik on “Fuzzy Sets” through the Google Meet platform.
Prof. Amrita Naik started the session by introducing the concept of Rough Sets in feature reduction. She then explained the terminologies such as indiscernibility, upper and lower approximation. She also explained each concept with the help of examples. She demonstrated the concepts like reducts and core which are helpful in reducing the dimensionality of features. She also explained the application of Rough sets in Data Mining and Research.
Prof. Janhavi Naik later explained about fuzzy sets. She gave an introduction to fuzzy sets and its applications. She also spoke about the comparison on Fuzzy sets and crisps sets. Different examples were given to make the topic easy to understand and compare different sets. The membership functions and characteristics were explained.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Vivek Jog. The session was indeed an interesting one and was enjoyed by all faculty members and received good feedback from the audience.
The National Science Day
The Department of Zoology, in collaboration with EcoClub celebrated the National Science Day on 1st March, 2021. The Theme for this year’s Science Day is “Future of STI: Impacts on Education, Skills, and Work”. The day-long programme commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Dhritimoni Goswami, followed by the inaugural speech by Professor JN Vishwakarma, Director, School of Life Sciences. Professor Vishwakarma fascinated the audience with his profound knowledge and advocated on the need for taking science to the masses. An Annual Calendar 2021, designed by Miss Sangeeta Das, was released by Dr. Monmoyuri Baruah, Director, School of Fundamental and Applied Sciences.
The events conducted in the first session included Lockdown Treasury, where students’ creative forms of art during the lockdown were showcased; and Campus Bird Count 4.0: A Presentation on Avian Diversity in Assam Don Bosco University by Miss Sangeeta Das. The campus bird count is an annual event at Assam Don Bosco University which unveils some amazing species of birds spotted on our campus. A pre-event video presentation competition, Biology for the Young ‘un, was also organised with the aim of using one’s skills in explaining everyday scientific phenomena to young minds, particularly school kids!
In the second session, a Documentary ‘Three Identical Strangers’ was featured. The celebration concluded with a note of appreciation by Miss Emma Magdalene Nonglang, Student Coordinator of the Event.
Walking and working for the environment
The first-year students of the departments of Computer Application and Physical Education in collaboration with the Eco Club of Don Bosco College, Panjim, and Goenkar Sangathi, a youth-based organisation, organised an Eco walk and clean-up drive in Campal on 27th February 2021.
Through the eco walk, the students highlighted areas which need attention like the St. Inez Creek and the restored areas in Campal. The walk ended with everyone getting their hands dirty to clean up the garbage that is regularly thrown on this stretch. Several bags of garbage were collected by all the participants and volunteers.
Goenkar Sangathi provided the resources like bin bags and gloves as well as guided the participants on segregation and collection of the garbage. The entire programme was successfully organised and well attended.

Report of Webinar organized by IIC titled ‘Business Model and Canvas (BMC)’: Mr Venugopal TR
Institution innovation council (IIC) of Don Bosco College of Engineering organized a one-day webinar on March 01, 2021, titled ‘Business Model and Canvas (BMC)’ in association with FiiRE (Forum for Innovation Incubation Research & Entrepreneurship). It was well-received by more than 100 participants of various colleges. Prof. Suraj Marathe started the session with a warm welcome to all the attendees, he introduced the DBCE IIC, and gave an overview of its function & activities. He then introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Venugopal TR, Incubation Manager – FiiRE.
The session was quite interactive. He started the session by stating the nine-block business model – Customer Segments, Value proposition, Channels, Customer relationship, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Partners and Cost Structure. BMC is a strategic tool that helps to achieve business goals in a systematic approach. Mr. Venugopal explained the functions and tools used in each block with practical examples. He also enlightened the atendees on the opportunities and challenges that the BMC model has created. He further encouraged all to follow their dreams of building their own start-ups with a systematic approach.
The session ended with a Q&A session, allowing the participants to clarify their doubts about the BMC model. Student coordinator Ms. Benecia Colaço proposed the vote of thanks.
